-Sports summit, awards presentations hold Thursday

Ikorodu – Oga Development Association (IKODASS), on Wednesday, staged another edition of its sports fiesta with schools across the council participating in the field & track and indoor events.
The sports fiesta, which is part of the larger sporting events – Ikorodu – Oga Sports Fiesta & Summit/Awards scheduled for this year’s celebration, took place today at the Ikorodu Town Hall and Oriwu College Sports Arena.
The initiative is themed, ‘Re – Awakening of Sporting Activities in Ikorodu Division’.
While Ikorodu Town Hall hosted the indoor games – Table Tennis, Chess and Scrabble, Oriwu College Arena hosted the field events. A total of seven schools participated in the Scrabble and Chess games, and 16 schools entered for the Table Tennis, while 13 schools took part in the track events.
The Chairman of the IKODASS, Alhaji Kolawole Fatai Olayiwola who was present at the two locations, officially declared the games opened alongside other officials.

Speaking with the IKODASS Chairman, Alhaji Kolawole, said that the sports fiesta was initiated to discover young talents and prepare them for stardom.
“The Ikorodu -Oga Festival has a clear purpose, and one of the key purposes of this event is to engage our youths; the young ones and prepare them to represent Lagos State, and eventually, Nigeria. That is why we are introducing these sporting activities, and we plan to make the activities a continuous exercise during the Ikorodu Oga Festival.
“What you are seeing today shows that the Ikorodu Division has a lot of potentials and talented young people, and we aim to discover them through this festival.
Speaking on his expectations from the young talents, IKODASS Chairman said:

“We are looking forward to breaking new records. We want to see those who will earn medals and trophies, and also recognize everyone who participated. There will be a trophy for the best school in this year’s challenge.
“Our goal is to discover new talents who will go on to represent Ikorodu Division in larger competitions. For some time, Ikorodu has not been well represented in Lagos sports, and this time, we want to change that. We want Ikorodu athletes to stand out and represent Lagos State proudly. That is our aim and objective”, he said.
Mr Fajebe Babatunde, Chairman, Sub – Committee on Sports, also speaking with THE IMPACT, also emphasised that the games are to discover grassroots talents that would place Ikorodu on the global sporting map.
A sport officer, Education District II, Mr Ajibade Oladimeji, charged students to engage in educative and sporting activities together for their all – round development.

Prince Hakeem Olukunga, former Board Member, Lagos State Sports Commission, who lauded the initiative added that the presentation of awards which is slated for the Aayngbure palace on Thursday, is to recognize the contributions of seven outstanding Ikorodu personalities post – houmously.
Other IKODASS officials in attendance were, Prince Rasheed Elemuren, IKODASS Secretary, Mr. Agbaje Olalekan, Chairman, IKODASS Sports Fiesta, Mr. Ishaq Bisiriyu – Sports Committee Member, Ms. Taiwo, IKODASS Administrative Scretary and Mrs Bisi Awolesi, among others.
